A steering group run three Speaking Up Groups, courses accredited by the North East Open College Network, and art workshops leading to an annual Touring Exhibition.
All group work focuses on encouraging people with learning disabilities to feel more confident about speaking up for things that they feel to be important.
People using the project can find out about the Valuing People White Paper, Direct Payments and much more.
The Big Lottery have funded our project for three years.

This conference was held in November 2007 at the Discovery Museum. Forty people came and listened to Raymond Johnson from People First talk about how to campaign.
He also showed us photos of a campaign he was in where he was tied up and not allowed to speak. This photo was shown in lots of magazines and newspapers.
The workshops were to give people ideas on how to campaign in different ways.
There were workshops on:
printing a campaign t-shirt
using the computer to get your message across
campaign postcards
sing a campaign song,and
speaking up with poetry.
All were very much enjoyed. You can listen to the song.
People told us of campaigns that they are involved in - making sure that there are accessible toilets in public places, trying to save jobs at a gardening project at Ridley Hall and saying no to college place cuts.
A big thank you to everyone who helped make this conference kick ass!
We hope to run another conference in autumn 2008. Let us know if you would like to be part of organising this event. If you have any ideas give us a ring on 0191 384 5522!
